Chiang Mai is often considered the capital of northern Thailand and is the second largest city. It is located some 700 km (435 miles) north of the capital, Bangkok. There are approximately 150,000 inhabitants in the old city area of Chiang Mai, but over one million people within the Chiang Mai province itself.
The old city is surrounded by a wall and a moat. In years past, this was an attempt to keep out invaders. Today, as well as being notable historically, it also acts as a landmark which helps navigate the city. Over a million travelers visit Chiang Mai each year. Our city offers every convenience a big city has to offer, friendly local people who stop to say "Sawasdee khrup/ka" (Hello!) to new arrivals, sightseeing and exciting trips outside the city.
Chiang Mai shares many natural wonders with its visitors. Organised trekking is a big feature here and this takes you deep into the jungle. Elephant habitats and hill-tribe villages are popular destination too. Thrill seekers will enjoy riding zip-lines and walking on tree-level skybridges in an ecotrekking rainforest adventure. Also, several large rivers, like Maetang River which is situated 40 km outside of Chiang Mai, offer exciting 4-5 grade rapids provide exhilarating white water rafting and bamboo rafting.
Elsewhere in northern Thailand, short trips are available to Pai, a paradise of village calm and relaxation, up to Doi Suthep temple, and out to Chiang Rai. In this part of Thailand, you'll never get bored!
